Yes, I spent New Year's Day 2007 at El Camino hospital, recovering from an emergency appendectomy the previous evening. Fortunately it was laparoscopic so they let me out late that afternoon. I guess it's a new year I'll remember ... perhaps not so fondly!

Barbara Heninger > So, what do you do in the hospital when you've been lying awake since midnight and it's finally morning? If you're me, you get out your cellphone camera and make a self portrait with the dawning light. I took this at about 6:50 am. And then ... it was boring again.

Barbara Heninger > Later, Andy and Maddie arrived with a real camera. I was off the oxygen by then...

Barbara Heninger > ...but still on an IV, with antibiotics.

Barbara Heninger > The little breathing toy. You have to suck in air hard enough to make all three balls rise (as shown).

Barbara Heninger > Maddie brought her big book of crossword puzzles.

Barbara Heninger > So we finished a puzzle together.
