Waikiki sights : This gallery contains various photos I took during our breaks. There aren't any photos of students here (except for 3 boys I spotted boogie boarding one afternoon, and two girls who posed for me near the International Marketplace), but it might be fun to see the area. It ends with a collection of photos of ABC Stores, known locally as "All Blocks Covered." This company's business model is to be so ubiquitous that any tourist anywhere in town can wander into one to grab a Hawaiian shirt, some suntan lotion, or souvenir.

3-28 Chaperone dinner, and some tattoos! : On our last evening, I took a walk and found some students getting tattoos at the International market. Not to worry - they were airbrush or henna tattoos! Then the chaperones and teachers ate dinner at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider Hotel.

3-28 Snorkel trip : Friday was the big snorkel trip! Event included motoring in 2 catamarans to a sand bar, where the kids played volleyball and ate a barbecue lunch, then off to a reef to see the fishes. Even Mrs. Bernard, who does not like to swim with fishes, had fun on the sandbar! TV tie-ins: We also saw the island used as "Gilligan's Island," and spotted the fuselage set for "Lost."

3-26 Hawaii Theatre - rehearsal & performance : After the luau, we went to the Hawaii Theatre for a short rehearsal and sound check. The hall -- and the sound -- was amazing! And it was even more amazing to perform that evening. Afterwards, as the kids waited for their bus to arrive, they photographed each other, the award plaque, the hall... Some of the photos here were taken by students using the small Canon camera from the concert organizers.

3-25 Adjudicated concert - and the Big News! : Adjudicated concert performance at the Grand Ballroom in the Pacific Beach Hotel. The band performed Western One-Step, Sleep, and El Camino Real. Several hours later Robin called an 'emergency' meeting in our hotel lobby at about 11:00pm to announce the big news: that Mountain View had received the highest points in scoring, and would play a command performance at the Hawaii Theatre in Honolulu the next evening.

3-24 Afternoon concert at Ala Moana Center : Each band performed a concert at the Ala Moana center in Honolulu, a huge three-story shopping mall. Shoppers stopped to listen or watched the group as they glided up the escalators. MVHS performed the Overture to Candide, Sleep, Western One-Step from the Suite of Old American Dances, El Camino Real, and the march from the movie "Midway."

3-24 Morning rehearsal with group from New Zealand : The morning of March 24, the band participated in a co-rehearsal with a small group from New Zealand at the competition hotel. The combined groups each played one of their pieces together, and then each performed a piece for the other group. Some of the photos were taken with the little camera by Tal Lorberbaum.
